K9 Dazer Issues

The Dazer is a handheld ultrasonic device built for deterring dogs. The plastic unit is meant to deliver an uncomfortable, but not harmful, ultrasonic sound -- only audible to dogs. This device therefore is meant to stop a dog in its tracks and can be appreciated by postal workers, delivery people, along with walkers, joggers and bikers. As effective as the Dazer may sound, there are also some issues that are worth mentioning.
  1. Reliability Issues

    • While the Dazer may effectively deter many dogs, it is important to point out that it will not necessarily work with all dogs. The Dazer is not designed to be effective against docile, infirm and highly-trained dogs. According to the Dazer's instructional manual, the Dazer is also not effective when used with deaf dogs, therefore aggressive deaf dogs will not be able to perceive the unpleasant sound and will not respond to it as expected.

    Distance Issues

    • The Dazer may have limitations when it comes to distance. To work well, the Dazer is most effective when used at five to 15 feet from the dog, according to the Dazer's instructional manual. The closer the animal gets, the more intense the ultrasonic sound. When used at greater distances, the dog may still perceive the sound, but it will likely not be sufficient enough to generate an avoidance response.

    Angulation Issues

    • In order to work well, the Dazer must be used in the correct way. For this reason, it is important to read the manual and follow the instructions carefully. It is important to point the silver disc front of the Dazer directly towards the dog for best results. This means you will have to face the dog frontally in order for the Dazer to work correctly.

    Barrier Issues

    • While the Dazer may effectively stop an aggressive dog in its tracks, it is important to consider that the presence of barriers will make the Dazer ineffective. This means that you cannot use the Dazer from behind glass, a wall or door, or a solid wood fence, since the sound will not travel across these structures. However, you can effectively use the Dazer behind a chain link fence, or a wooden fence with openings between the slats.
