Fence Height for a Boxer

Boxers are an attractive breed of dog with a love for people and for running. If you allow your boxer to remain outside without being attached to a leash or lead line, it is important to have a suitable fence around the area where the dog is kept to prevent your boxer from running away.
  1. Importance

    • Boxers are a breed of dog with a high energy level, and for this reason it is important to give your dog ample opportunity to run around to release that energy. Providing your dog with a fenced-in yard gives him an opportunity to run free without being slowed down by a lead or leash. Boxers are also friendly dogs that enjoy meeting people, and allowing your dog out in a non-fenced yard can result in it chasing after passers-by to play with them.

    Fence Height

    • Boxers are very athletic dogs that can jump quite high if they are in normal physical shape. Although even a tall fence does not offer a guarantee that a boxer won't escape, taller fences do increase the chance of successfully keeping your boxer in. You should use a minimum height of 6 feet when installing a fence in a yard for a boxer.

    Fence Materials

    • There are two primary styles of fence that can be used for fencing in a yard for a boxer --- link fences and wood slat fences. Although a chain link fence suffices for some boxers, others can learn to climb over, limiting the success of your enclosure. A wooden fence with no gaps between slats provides the ideal fencing. It serves as a visual barrier, as well, preventing your boxer from seeing passers-by and minimizing its urge to climb out.

    Other Precautions

    • In addition to concerns about your boxer going over the fence, many boxers will try to escape a fenced-in enclosure by digging under the fence to freedom. If you install a wooden fence, apply slats on both sides of the fence, if possible, so the cross beams are not exposed, as smart boxers can learn to climb the support beams to escape.
