Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Flat collar
Instructions
Measure the circumference of your dog's neck with a measuring tape. Flat collars are sold by size in inches, so check the size of your dog's neck to know which collar to buy.
Place two fingers flat against your dog's neck, side by side. Pull the collar snug against your fingers and secure the buckle or clasp. The "two finger rule" gives your dog plenty of room to breathe.
Test the collar to ensure that it does not easily slip over your dog's ears. You should be confident that your dog won't slip off of its collar while walking on the leash.
Insert two fingers under the collar frequently to ensure that it still fits properly, especially if your dog is not full grown. Puppies may go through multiple collars before they reach their mature size. Even for adult dogs, some collars may loosen or tighten on their own. Check the collar regularly to ensure that your dog is still able to breathe freely and the collar will not slip off too easily.
