Things to Knit for Poodles

Knitting for one's loved ones is a great way to express love and give a gift that has had a lot of effort and caring put into it. A pet poodle qualifies as a loved one, and animals of all kinds appreciate the love, affection and attention that gift-giving can bring. However, dogs -- and poodles, especially -- present a unique challenge for a knitter.
  1. Knitted Rugs

    • A rug is a great thing to knit for a poodle. It's the perfect way to get rid of some stashed yarns and leftover bits. If made from wool, the rug can be felted for warmth and comfort. Or, instead of using yarn, a rag rug could be made. Rag rugs are thicker and will make laying on the floor more comfortable, especially for the larger standard poodles.

    Dog Sweaters

    • While the larger standard poodles won't get as cold as the smaller breeds, a sweater is a good choice to make for a poodle of any size depending on the climate the dog must deal with. Dog sweater patterns of all sizes are available for free online, and can be made of any variety of materials.

    Dog Toys

    • Poodles were originally bred as retrievers, and they still have those retrieving instincts. Making a toy for a poodle to fetch is a way to combine a love of knitting and poodles. Knit a toy in the shape of a dog bone or use any small stuffed animal pattern. For fun, try a poodle-shaped toy pattern.

    Dog Bed

    • A dog bed is a large fluffy pillow for a dog to sleep. It's especially important for the larger standard poodles who might be older and have trouble getting up on a bed or getting comfortable on the floor. This is a much larger project, but it can be a wonderful way to provide comfort and warmth for a poodle of any size and age.
