Instructions for Weaving a Leather Leash

Leather leashes are not only a fashionable accessory, but they are also very durable and can withstand quite a bit of pressure if your dog tends to pull. However, buying leather leashes at a pet supply store can get quite expensive --- some leather leashes cost upwards of $50 apiece. To avoid this hefty price tag, create your own braided leather leash with strips of soft leather and a metal clasp. All the materials you need are available at a fabric supply store for a fraction of the cost that you would pay in a pet store.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the exact length of leash you would like and multiply this number by two and add 8 inches for the handle. Cut two strips of leather to match this measurement.

    • 2

Thread your metal leash clasp onto both strings and then fold the two pieces in half with the clasp in the center of the fold. Tie a loop knot at the end to secure the clasp to the center of the leash. You will now have four leather strands to braid with.

    • 3

Attach the clip to a piece of fabric, or into the clip of a clipboard to hold the leash in place as you braid. Lay out each of the four strips of leather with a bit of space between each strand. The strand on the far left is strand A, the strands in the middle are strand B and strand C and the strand on the right is strand D.

    • 4

Bring strand D over top of strand C then bring strand A over top of strand B. Continue this pattern of bringing the outermost strands into the center to form the entire length of your leash.

    • 5

Braid the leash until it is the desired length, plus the additional 8 inches.

    • 6

Fold 8 inches of the braid over to form a loop handle. Thread a lacing needle with some heavy thread, and tie a knot at the end of the thread. Thread the needle through the end of the braid, through both layers of leather. Stitch the thread through both layers, following the pattern of the braid for 3 inches.

    • 7

Tie a second knot and trim the excess thread and leather to complete the leash.
