How to Crochet Little Dog Patterns

Small coats and coverings can help keep little dogs warm in cold weather. Crocheted garments are popular items for pampered darlings. Sizing patterns can be a bit tricky for would-be crafters who want to crochet fashionable apparel for four-legged models. Few things are as frustrating as finding that an otherwise finely-crafted doggie coat does not fit. Getting it right the first time takes a bit of patience and plenty of measuring, but the end result will be a warm coat that fits your favorite pup.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your pet's back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, around the neck, around the torso just behind the front legs. Measure around the dog's belly in front of the back legs, and across the front of the chest from front leg to front leg. Keep these five measurements handy.

    • 2

Check your pattern for size measurements. Patterns often contain instructions for several sizes. Select the size closest to your pet's measurements.

    • 3

Make a sample square to check the gauge of your stitches. Most patterns give this information in rows (length) and stitches (width). Change your hook size up or down to get the correct gauge. Do not skip this step. If your stitch size is not the same as that of the pattern, the garment size will be off.

    • 4

Determine the size difference between the pattern and your measurements. Add the changes to your pattern instructions and work them in as you go. Measure your work frequently to catch any problem areas early.

Create your own pattern by using a simple stitch such as double-crochet. Make a basic rectangle using the back measurement and the chest measurement. Attach three buttons using a needle and yarn. Place one at the neck opening, one behind the front legs, and one at the upper belly. Leave the back open to avoid soiling during potty breaks. Slide the buttons through the stitches to close the coat.
