How to Make a Break Stick

You can use a breaking stick to release the grip your dog has on another when a fight breaks out. They are typically used for larger, more athletic breeds, especially Pit Bulls. The stick must be made of sturdy wood-- don't use anything too hard, like iron, or it could break your dog's teeth. To use, insert the stick into the gap at the back of your dog's mouth were the teeth do not meet. When your dog is in the middle of a fight and has a good grip on another dog, insert the breaking stick and twist it to force your dog's jaw open.

    • 1

Go to a home improvement store and purchase an ax or hatchet handle.

    • 2

Have an employee chop off the top portion of the handle -- about 3 inches off the top. Most major home improvement stores will have complimentary wood trimming in the lumber section.

    • 3

Leave the back end of the handle as is and focus on shaping the front end.

    • 4

Lay the handle flat on its side on a table and, with your chisel, smooth out the top and bottom portions of the stick where it curves upward by chipping away the wood. Aim to create a straight line across the top and bottom.

    • 5

Lift the stick off its side, so the top side is pointing up, and mark where you will carve away wood to make a slimmer tip. The tip should be 1/4 inch thick so start with a 1/4 inch thick marking on the front end and begin to slightly curve it outward so it meets with the thickness of the back of the stick.

    • 6

Use the gouge and hammer to carve away the wood around your 1/4 inch marking. It would be helpful to have someone holding on to the stick for you while you slowly carve away.

    • 7

Use your sanding tool to round out the front end so there are no sharp corners and the front has a smooth, ball-like tip.

    • 8

Use the sanding tool to smooth out the entire stick, making sure that there is no splintering.
