How to Use a Sandbox for Dogs

Dogs enjoy spending time with you outside as you do yard work or relax. Unfortunately for some, their natural instincts lead them to dig in the dirt to cool and soften the ground, hide a bone or search for prey. This instinctual behavior becomes a problem when the dog digs up and damages your lawn and garden plants. You can prevent these problems by setting up a sandbox for your dog. The sandbox fulfills your dog's digging needs without harming your garden or lawn.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a plastic sandbox on a hard surface, such as your patio.

    • 2

Fill the sandbox with dirt or sand from your yard.

    • 3

Bury bones and biscuits in the sandbox to encourage your dog to dig there.

    • 4

Carry or lure your dog to the sandbox, using a favorite plastic squeak toy or treat. Once the dog goes into the box, praise it and give it a positive reinforcement such as a click and a treat, a toy or verbal praise. Continue rewarding your dog whenever it shows interest in the sandbox.
