Eating
-
Yorkshire terriers are smaller than other dogs and therefore eat less than other dogs. The type of food you feed your dog will vary based on preference. Yorkshire terriers need to be fed "real" food such as chicken and vegetables. This is healthier for them, as many dog foods do not need to pass the same standards as fresh foods. As you will only be feeding your Yorkie small amounts of food multiple times a day, you can afford to buy a smaller bowl.
Sleeping
-
You will need to buy your Yorkshire terrier a bed. It is best that this be a pillow-type bed. There is a very high likelihood that your Yorkie will chew the bed no matter what it's made of. If your Yorkie will be sleeping a crate, then you will have similar concerns regarding your pet chewing the crate. A small metal crate is best.
Bathing
-
Bathing a Yorkie is different than bathing other dogs. This is because of the Yorkie's hair texture. You will need to brush and comb your Yorkie immediately after bathing to get any tangles out of their hair. First use a slick brush to get the superficial tangles out, then use a comb to get deeper knots out.
Walking
-
You will need to buy supplies to walk your Yorkie. First you will need to purchase a collar. Purchasing a breakaway collar is recommended, so the dog can escape in an emergency. You will also need to purchase ID tags. You may want to get smaller ID tags than for normal dogs, so they are not too big and bulky for your Yorkie.
Playing
-
Yorkies are very prone to chewing, and they will chew your furniture if you do not provide an alternative. As such, make sure they have lots of toys to chew when they are teething. Similarly, these toys will keep them occupied when they are bored anyway. As they will chew frequently, you may want to choose hardier toys that will not rip or break off easily.
Training
-
You will need cleaning supplies for those inevitable accidents on the floor. If you are crate-training your Yorkie puppy, you will need a crate, but not just any crate will do. You need to purchase a slightly smaller crate than for a normal dog. If the crate you purchase is too big, your Yorkie will have no problems soiling it, defeating the purpose of the crate.
