How to Build a Lightweight Dog Ramp

For dog owners who have a pet that is getting up there in age, or one that has a disability, a lightweight dog ramp can help both human and pet, not only physically, but mentally as well. Building one yourself at home can save money in the long run -- you just need to know what materials to use.

Instructions

Measure the length and width for the ramp you will need. You will first need to know where the ramp will be used. If it is needed to climb a few steps, the length of the ramp should be anywhere between 3 to 5 feet. If it will be used to climb into a car or onto a bed, 5 to 6 feet should be sufficient.

If you didn't have them precut, use a table saw to cut the boards. You should cut the 2x4 boards to the length of the ramp. These will make up the frame of the ramp. Cut the sheet of lightweight plywood to the needed length and width. This will be the main part of the ramp, so it is important that the cuts are precise.

    • 3

Lay the cut sheet of lightweight plywood on top of the 2x4 frame. Make sure there are two inches of plywood hanging off of each side of the frame before nailing it down. When nailing the plywood down, be sure the entire head of the nail is flush with the surface of the plywood to avoid any injuries to the dog's paws.

Cut the piece of carpet so that it can be wrapped around the edges of the plywood. This will help with traction for your dog. Stretch the carpet so that it is tight, and staple in place from underneath. If the carpet is too thin, the staples may stick out and cause injury to the dog, so make sure the carpet is thick enough.
