Strongest Dog Collars

Your dog has broken through a collar or two and you are looking for a strong collar that will give you full control over the animal. To determine what type of collar will be best, identify the reason that the collar broke. Was the dog chewing it? Did the collar get caught on something that resulted in damage? Did the buckle break? Or did the dog simply pull hard enough to snap the chain or leather?
  1. Head

    • If your dog is pulling hard because it is aggressive or untrained, try a head collar that fits over the muzzle. Dogs use their shoulders and the weight of their bodies to pull, and the head collar prevents the dog from being able to do so. Guide the dog's head with the collar, and the body will follow. If the dog is unable to pull on the leash, it will not be possible for it to snap the collar.

    Leather

    • Collars are usually made from leather, webbing or metal. These collars are engineered for aggressive dogs and those participating in attack training, and are strong enough to control any dog.

Weakness of a leather collar is often due to the buckle, which may break long before the leather band does, and some manufacturers combat this by using a double-tongued buckle made of stainless steel.

    Metal

    • For strong, muscular dogs with thick neck fur and skin, such as bulldogs, pit bulls and Rottweilers, a metal prong collar prevents the dog from pulling, as the prongs will cause pain when the collar tightens.

A metal choke chain tightens when the dog pulls and is also a strong collar. Buy one made of stainless steel, but watch out for rusted links, which can cause weaknesses and break. Metal collars can cause damage to the dog's throat and trachea if used on a dog that pulls excessively.

    Nylon

    • For powerful dogs that are difficult to fit with regular collars, purchase a heavy-duty nylon collar with double-tongued buckles. These collars are available in a variety of colors and designs. The collars are handmade and can be ordered online.

    Martingale

    • A martingale collar is made from strong nylon webbing material and a length of chain. The largest section of the collar is made of webbing and connected to a loop of chain. The webbed section fits around the front of the dog's neck, and the leash is clipped onto a ring on the chain loop. When the dog pulls on the leash, the chain section is pulled taut and the collar tightens. This helps to train and control the dog in the same way that a choke chain does, but without the risk of damage to the dog's trachea.
