How to Adjust a Martingale Collar for a Labrador Retriever

The thick neck and blocky head of the Labrador retriever makes proper collar fit a challenge. Labradors need a collar flexible enough to fit over their square-shaped heads, but tight enough to stay in place as the dog works. Martingale collars are an ideal choice, as they expand to fit over the head but tighten up when pressure is applied to the leash, keeping the collar in place and the dog under control.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the thickest part of your dog's neck. Labradors have thick, wide necks, so measure just above the junction of the neck and shoulder. Add 2 inches to the measurement for adjustment.

    • 2

Purchase a martingale collar in the size range that corresponds to the dog's neck measurement. Collars are typically sold in a range of sizes, with most Labradors requiring a large or extra-large collar.

    • 3

Slide the large circle of the collar over your Labrador's head, and push it down to the middle of the dog's neck. The smaller circle, called the control loop, should be positioned at the back of the dog's neck.

Adjust the buckles on the collar to tighten it until you can fit two fingers between the neck and the inside of the collar. Attach a leash to the D-ring on the control loop. As you pull back on the leash, the control loop tightens, preventing the martingale collar from slipping over your Labrador's head.
