Tips on Applying Frontline

Frontline is a topically applied liquid treatment that destroys ticks and fleas on dogs and cats. This pesticide breaks the life cycle of these external parasites and protects pets for a month after application of the product. The product can be sprayed onto a pet, or deposited from a pipette. It is waterproof after an initial period, which allows the animals to be groomed and bathed as required. Frontline is safe to use on pregnant and lactating female animals, as well as puppies and kittens of eight weeks and older.
  1. General Considerations

    • Frontline is manufactured for dogs of all sizes, and the box contains the correct dosage level based on the weight of the dog to be treated. Frontline is also manufactured to treat cats. Frontline products which are manufactured for cats should not be used on dogs and visa versa, as the concentrations of some ingredients are different and could be harmful when used on the wrong species. Frontline Plus, which destroys the eggs and larvae of both ticks and fleas in addition to the adult parasites, is also available.

    Pipette Applicators

    • Frontline pipettes or applicators are packaged separately in individual foil pockets. Removed each foil pocket by tearing along the perforated lines. It is then a simple procedure to remove the pipette from the foil. Remove the tip by breaking it off. This is best done with the pipette label facing you. Apply the product to an area of skin where your pet can't reach to lick it. A spot between the pet's shoulder blades is normally ideal.

    Applying to the Animal

    • Nervous or very fidgety animals should be gently restrained by an assistant. The pipette allows quick, painless application directly onto the skin. It is best to remove the animal's collar before applying the liquid. Part the pet's coat in order to deposit the liquid directly onto the pet's skin. Place the nozzle of the pipette directly onto the animal's skin squeeze all of the contents out. The pet must not be bathed or allowed to swim for 48 hours after Frontline has been applied.

    Applying from a Spray Bottle

    • The Frontline dosage calculator will indicate the total amount of liquid required, as per the weight of the individual pet. This total amount is represented by the number of times the bottle must be pumped. This total amount of liquid must also be divided over five areas on the pet's body. These include the animal's right side, left side, back, neck and face and belly. Ultimately, the areas should overlap, to ensure that the entire pet has been treated. It is best to apply the Frontline in a well ventilated area and important to ensure that the animal's entire coat is noticeably wet from being sprayed with the product.
