Free Crochet Dog Sweater Directions

This dog sweater is a quick crochet project even for a beginner. You work the beginning of this pattern in rounds until the body portion is done and the shoulder portion begins. Using simple stitches - the chain, slip stitch and half-double crochet - you'll create a cuddly cover your dog will enjoy wearing. It should be easy to adjust this pattern for your particular canine friend since it was written to create a custom fit. The best part is, your pet won't be likely to point out any missed stitches.

Instructions

    • 1

Use G crochet hook and knitting worsted in the colors of your choice to begin. Tie a loop of yarn on the hook. A chain stitch is done by wrapping a loop of yarn over the hook and pulling it through. Do a continuous row of chains until they completely circle your pet's waist. This is the sweater's bottom edge.

Join the two ends of the chain with a slip-stitch, being careful not to twist the chain. To do a slip-stitch, insert the hook into the first chain and pull that loop through the last chain you just completed.

    • 2

Chain two, then do a half-double crochet in each chain around. The half-double crochet stitch is done this way: yarn over, pull another loop of yarn through the stitch you are working, then yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Repeat the half-double crochet stitch in every stitch of the first chain round.

Join with another slip-stitch in the top of the beginning of the second chain and make another two chains. Join each round with a slip-stitch, and chain two as you begin the next round. The sweater body rounds are completed when the material just reaches the back of the animal's front legs.

    • 3

Begin the shoulder section by doing slip-stitches on your work in each stitch from the outside of one leg to the outside of the other leg. Be sure to write down the number of these slip-stitches to refer to when you complete the shoulder section. Follow the slip-stitches with half-double crochets in each of the remaining stitches for the round. Chain two and TURN.

Crochet the number of rows it takes to reach the base of the dog's neck. Chain two and turn at the end of each row.

    • 4

Chain the same number as the number of slip-stitches you did when you began the shoulder portion of the sweater. DO NOT TURN. Join with a slip-stitch to the opposite side of row you just completed. Chain two.

Do a half-double crochet in each slip-stitch and chain around. Join with a slip-stitch at the top of the chain2. Chain two and continue WITHOUT TURNING. Repeat this last round two more times. Join with a slip-stitch to the top of the last chain2 and fasten off.

      Weave in all yarn ends.
