DIY Dog Clothes

The saying goes that fashion is art, but the philosophy need not only apply to human fashion. Dogs can also make artistic fashion statements. While it may be tempting to buy dog clothing, pooch apparel often comes with a high price tag. A cheaper option is to make dog clothing from items around the house. A smaller dog, such as a Chihuahua, toy poodle or Yorkshire terrier, can use an extra layer to keep warm when out walking. Use a baby bib to make a baby bib jacket for a small dog.

Instructions

  1. Baby Bib Dog Jacket

    • 1

Find a baby bib. Use an old one you have around the house or ask a friend or relative for one. Make sure your bib is properly washed before beginning the project. If you need to purchase one from a store, bibs are relatively inexpensive and can often be bought in bulk packs of two or three, saving you money.

    • 2

Measure the width of the bib to make sure it fits around your dog's body. Also, be sure the bib you choose is about the length of your dog. A longer bib will not fit a tiny dog.

    • 3

Lay your bib flat on a table so that the front of the bib is facing the table surface and you are looking at the bib's back. Cut a one-inch by one-inch square (with two sides attached) of adhesive hook and loop fastener, such as Velcro or Duragrip.

    • 4

Pull apart the two pieces of adhesive hook and loop fastener. Attach the hook piece to the middle of one side of the bib's back. Attach the loop piece to the middle of the opposite side of the bib's front. These will keep the bib jacket securely fastened around your dog's body.

    • 5

Place the bib's neck hole over your dog's neck with the front of the bib facing away from the dog's body. The bib should look like a small cape resting along the dog's back. Attach the hook and loop fastener pieces together under your dog's body to hold the bib jacket in place. Allow your dog to walk around in his new jacket to get comfortable and familiar with it before you take him outside.
