Standard Boots
-
Basic cloth boots with plastic or rubber soles are suitable for keeping your dog's feet safe from stones, cuts and most chemicals. However, they are neither warm nor waterproof, so if your dog gets cold easily these are not the best choices. Boots should either have a cuff at the top that is elasticized, or a fastening strap to hold it in place. Measure the dog's feet while standing flat to find the best fitting boot possible.
Dry Boots
-
Basic dry boots resemble balloons, with a rolled opening that stretches to fit over the dog's paw. Made from natural rubber, they come in bright colors and are easy to slip on and off. They are waterproof, disposable and reusable, and come in packs of 12.
High performance dry boots are fleece-lined for warmth, with heavier rubber soles and plasticized uppers. These will keep your dog's feet warm and dry even if it steps into a puddle. These boots are usually longer to protect more of the foot, and are equipped with a fastening strap and Velcro to hold them in place.
Polar Boots
-
Polar boots extend all the way up to the dog's elbow and have soles made for icy conditions, with a lug pattern for improved winter traction. They have a laminated, three-layer soft shell upper that is breathable and weather resistant. A reinforced cuff helps keep the snow out, a buckle ankle strap and cord ensure the boot stays securely fastened and reflective trim provides added visibility.
Protective Boots
-
A vet-approved dog boot is ideal for use when a dog has had treatment to its feet. These boots will cushion the feet against hard surfaces and extreme temperature, and keep bandages and wounds dry. They are made with a waterproof nylon shell, a durable no-skid bottom and elastic straps. The dog wears them in a larger size than usual to protect a splint, cast or amputation from outdoor elements and from licking and chewing.
All Weather Boots
-
Sneaker-style dog boots provide all weather protection, keeping your dog's feet cool and safe from hot pavement and broken glass in summer as well as snug during mild winter weather. They have tough, flexible soles and a cushioned top that prevents chafing of the dog's legs. The boots stay closed with a Velcro strap and a zipper. The lining is made from neoprene with a tongue of soft, breathe-easy fabric and the outers are made of vegan leather and soft canvas.

The Best Dog Boots on the Market
Winter walks can be hard on your dog's feet. Sharp edges on the ice can cut its skin or can get between the pads and hurt, and the temperature of the ground can cause frostbite. Ice-melting chemicals may burn, and if licked off and ingested can cause health problems. Smaller dogs need boots more than big dogs, as the area of the foot retains less warmth.
