How to Make a Dog Leash for a Pitbull

Many people believe that a pitbull requires a different leash than the average dog. Pitbull owners gravitate toward chain leashes and collars, but these aren't necessary. Pitbulls are no more difficult to breed or control than any other large, active dog. But a pitbull does pull and chew, so the leash you choose needs to be resistant to that. Appropriate materials include leather and nylon, both of which are resistant to chewing and don't break easily.

  1. How to Make a Comfortable Leash

    • 1

Measure 8 feet in length of nylon webbing or leather, depending on which feels more comfortable to you. Both of these materials will withstand the vigorous pulling and chewing characteristics of the pitbull. The width should be 1-1/4 inches for a smaller palm and 1-1/2 inches for a larger palm.

    • 2

Tie one end of your chosen material around a metal clasp that is at least one inch in size. Tie the material with a tight knot, such as a figure eight knot. Test it several times to make sure it's secure before hooking it to your dog's collar or harness. Pitbulls are a strong breed, so you want to make sure it won't come loose.

Decide how large you would like the loop to be for you to hold when walking your pitbull. Fold the loose end over your hand and measure how many inches are required to make it comfortable to you. Once you decide what size feels right, sew the loose end at this determined point with strong needle and thread, such as the type used to sew denim.
