DIY Backpack For a Dog

Exercise is an important aspect of your dog's health. Sufficient exercise can reduce many problem behaviors, such as destruction, digging and barking. However, many owners don't have the time to give their dogs the exercise they need. Using a backpack on a walk reduces the time necessary to walk. In addition, it gives your dog a job on the walk rather than other jobs it may take on for itself, such as barking or pulling. You can purchase many styles of backpacks or make one on your own from simple materials.

  1. How to Make a Dog Backpack

    • 1

Select a child's backpack that is the appropriate size for your dog. If your dog is too small, you may have to stick with a fanny pack. Fit your dog properly so the pack fits and doesn't restrict your dog's movement. If you prefer to have the weight distributed on your dog's side, use fanny packs or saddle bags, one on each side of your dog.

    • 2

Measure across your dog's stomach and back (if you prefer the fanny packs) to properly fit the nylon straps. Some children's packs come with straps that fasten across the stomach. If not, you will have to add one. For the back straps, measure two nylon straps.

Use a strong needle and thread, such as the kind used to sew denim, to attach the straps. Consider using safety pins to attach before sewing to ensure you have selected the right size for your dog. You want the pack to be comfortable. If your dog chafes, add fleece covers on the straps.
