How to Size a Dog Collar

The size of the dog collar you use for your dog will depend on your pet's size and shape. If you choose a collar that's too loose, then you put your dog at risk. If the collar can be shimmied off and removed, then your dog is vulnerable if lost. This can also cause the collar to get stuck around your dog's face. On the other hand, if the collar is too tight, it could be very uncomfortable or even dangerous for your dog.

Put a tape measure around your dog's neck where the collar would go. Take the measurement in inches a few times to make sure it's accurate.

    • 2

Understand how dog collars are measured. If the dog collar is 14 inches from the center of the buckle to the last adjustment hole, then you will be able to adjust it from 12 to 14 inches around your dog's neck.

Look for collars that fit with the measurement you got. Using the above example, the 12- to 14-inch collar should be sufficient for a dog with a 13-inch neck measurement.

Try it out. Put the dog collar you picked out onto your dog to make sure it fits well.

Adjust the collar so that you can fit two fingers in between it and your dog's neck. This extra space is very important for your dog's comfort and safety.
