How to Put on a Pet Harness

A pet harness allows pet owners to walk their pet without placing pressure on the pet's neck like a chain or collar would. There are many types of harnesses, but the "H" type is the most common. This type of harness has two loops connected with two straight pieces. One loop goes around the animal's neck; the other goes around the body behind the front legs. The straight pieces lie against the back and chest. Pet harnesses are mainly used for dogs, but some cat owners take their cats out on a harness with a leash.

Instructions

  1. Back-Fastened Harnesses

    • 1

Close the front loop. Most pet harnesses have an adjustable snap buckle that clicks into place.

    • 2

Position the animal so its head is pointed away from you. Slide the front loop over the animal's head. Adjust the harness so the piece with the D-ring is in the middle of the back.

    • 3

Reach under the animal and grasp the leg closest to the closed leg hole. Lift the animal's foot, and thread it through the hole.

    • 4

Buckle the second loop over the animal's body behind the other leg, then attach the clip on the leash to the D-ring.
