Backpacks for Dogs

Put your canine companion to work by equipping it with a backpack. Just as humans are able to transport items in a backpack system, dogs are also capable of transporting their own supplies on a long hike or leisurely stroll. However, there are a few basic guidelines to follow to make backpacking an enjoyable experience for both you and your dog.
  1. Purpose

    • The purpose of a dog backpack is similar to that of a backpack intended for humans. A dog that is equipped with a comfortable backpack will be able to carry supplies that would otherwise have to be carried by its owners, or left behind. Typically, the dog is tasked with carrying its own food and water, although dogs can also pack human necessities if room and weight permit.

    Fit

    • Dog backpacks are available in a wide range of styles from multiple companies. In selecting a pack for your dog to wear, it's important to consider how the style of the pack will affect overall fit. Some packs secure underneath the dog's belly with nylon straps, and other packs feature fabric that wraps around the chest and belly. Choose a backpack that fits your dog's body type, frame and allows for airflow to keep the dog from becoming overheated.

    Weight

    • A healthy dog should be capable of carrying a load that is 15% to 20% of its overall body weight. However, it's important to consider the physical condition, age and health of the dog when loading the pack. Young, old or injured dogs may be less capable of bearing weight. All dogs should be given a chance to acclimate to the weight of their pack before packing a heavy load. Also, aim to load the pack so that weight is distributed evenly over the dog's body.

    Training

    • Dog backpacks are often recommended as a training tool for dogs that have trouble adhering to commands while walking on a leash. By fitting your dog with a backpack each time you head out for a walk, it will begin to associate the backpack with doing a job rather than becoming overexcited at the prospect of leaving the house. Begin training by acclimating your dog to wearing the pack and practice positive reinforcement by offering treats or praise when it acts appropriately while wearing the backpack.
