How to Make a Free-Flowing Dog Watering Bowl

One way to keep your dog's bowl water fresh and ensure that the bowl stays full for longer periods of time is by making a free-flowing watering bowl. A large jug or bottle attached to the bowl allows water to flow directly into the bowl. The project is easy, and only a few household items are necessary.

Peel labels off the two-liter jug and throw away the cap. Cut off the bottom of the jug with a serrated knife. Rinse out the inside and outside of the jug with warm water and some dish soap and let dry.

    • 2

Purchase a bowl that is wide enough for your dog to stick their nose in and lap up water. Make sure the bowl is two to three inches deep as well, with a flat bottom. For dogs metal bowls are recommended, as ceramic and plastic bowls are more easily broken or chewed up by dogs.

Flip the two-liter bottle upside down and insert it an inch deep into your bowl. Use masking tape to tape the wide neck of your jug to the side of the bowl, making sure that the tape is above water level.

Fill the bottle with water through the wide opening you cut out of the bottom of the bottle. Water will now flow into the jug and out into the bowl. As your pet drinks and takes water from the bowl, more water will fill its space to keep it full until the plastic bottle is empty. Depending on how much your dog drinks, expect to refill the jug every few days.
