How to Erect a Dog Fence

One of the most common problems faced by dog owners is allowing the dog to get the proper amount of exercise in a safe, controlled setting. Many people do not have the time in their schedules to take their dog for a run on a regular basis. One of the easiest solutions to this issue is to build a dog fence. A fenced-in yard will allow your dog to get the exercise it needs, while staying contained in a safe area.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal posts (approximately 5-6 feet in height)

Determine the length you want your fence to be. This will directly impact the amount of mesh cloth and posts you will need. In general, you should have one post for every 6 feet of fence length. Acquire your supplies once your measurements have been made.

Use a hammer to pound the metal posts into the ground, separating each with approximately 6 feet of space. Ensure that the posts are in line with one another to avoid building a crooked fence. Pound the posts so that they are at least 1.5 feet into the ground.

Connect the mesh cloth to the fence posts with the wire ties. Line the mesh up with the top of the posts and connect it by tying down the top, middle and bottom of the mesh. Securely tying down the mesh is the most important part of the process, as mesh that is not secured well will fail if the dog attempts to break through. Ensure that the bottom of the fence is flush with the ground. Check the fence for structural integrity by pulling or pushing on the mesh after it is erected.
