Beds for Dogs Raised Outdoors

While you may think sleeping in the grass or on concrete is fine for your outdoor dog, they need some basic comforts like a cushioned bed just like you do to get good rest. There are a few considerations when trying to find a bed for your outdoor pooch and knowing them can help you find the most comfortable bed for your four-legged friend.
  1. Weather

    • It's important to purchase a bed that can withstand weather elements and last a while in an outdoor environment. There are waterproof beds available so that rain cannot mildew or soak the bed, along with elevated and covered beds to protect your pooch from the rain. Heated beds are available for colder climates as well but should only be used when someone is around to supervise for safety.

    Size

    • Your dog's size plays a major role in the bed you select. You want your pooch to be able to fit on the bed with about 6 to 12 inches of extra space on all sides to make room for them to roll over and shift on the bed without falling off. Measure your pooch from snout to the start of their tail and add a foot to this measurement. This will give you a good idea of the length and width you'll need for the bed.

    Sleep Style

    • How your dog sleeps is also important in selecting their bed. For example, if your dog sleeps in a ball curled up into itself then a circular bed might work best for your. If your dog likes space though and prefers to sleep with paws outstretched, a longer rectangle or oval-shaped bed is your best bet.

    Bed Care

    • Since outdoor dog beds are going to be more susceptible to outdoor elements, this also means they are more susceptible to getting dirt on them. Because of this, you should try to find an outdoor bed that can withstand weather and also be easily cleaned as dirt will build up faster on outside beds than indoor ones.
