Instructions for the Halti Headcollar

When a dog pulls on the leash when using a regular collar, some owners try alternate training devices, such as head collars. A head collar allows the person to apply pressure to the dog's head, which gives more precision and requires less strength to control than a neck collar. Like any training device, proper use of the Halti helps increase successful training and decrease the dangers of harming the dog. Dogs often take time when adjusting to wearing the head collar.

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh your dog. Select the Halti Headcollar designed for your dog's weight. Halti Headcollars range from Size 0 for dogs 10 pounds or less up to Size 5 for dogs 90 pounds or larger.

    • 2

Put the Halti Headcollar on your dog to ensure a good fit. Place the nose strap midway on the muzzle with the metal ring on the bottom and fasten the neck strap. Place the neck strap in the upper third portion of your dog's neck. Fit at least two fingers between the collar and your dog's throat to avoid neck damage. Fit the muzzle strap high enough to avoid interfering with your dog's ability to open its mouth. Select a smaller or larger collar if necessary.

    • 3

Put the Halti on your dog while in your home or a confined area. Give your dog treats or praise while putting it on. Praise your dog and remove the Halti within one minute. Repeat the process several times, leaving the Halti on longer each time. Prevent the dog from any attempts to remove the Halti by distracting it or giving it treats.

    • 4

Practice leaving the head collar on for up to 10 minutes for the first few days. Toss a ball or play fetch to distract your dog from the Halti Headcollar and desensitize him to wearing it.

    • 5

Put the Halti on your dog and attach a leash to the ring under its head. Walk the dog around a confined area. Gently pull upward on the leash to prevent your dog from pulling or pawing the Halti. Praise your dog and give it treats after 15 seconds, 30 seconds and one minute. Remove the Halti. Repeat this process at least two times later on the same day.

    • 6

Practice short walks in a confined area until the dog stops fighting the Halti Headcollar. Pull gently on the head collar and practice changing directions and turning the dog around.

    • 7

Put the Halti and leash on your dog. Take the dog for a short walk outside in your yard or a familiar area. Give the dog treats. Extend the amount of time slowly.
