How to Make Winter Coats for Dogs

The sight of a cold, shivering dog is a sad one indeed, so protect your dog from the big chill this winter by creating a coat for your pooch. Such coats are easy to make with the help of a dog coat pattern, and wool is optimal for winter coats as it will surely keep your canine toasty. Your dog can wear the coat by itself or over a dog sweater, depending on temperature.

Measure your dog from the neck to the tail base and from between the shoulder blades to the top of the breastbone. Record the measurements. Purchase a dog coat pattern from your local pet supply store. Use paper and tape or scissors to add or subtract inches from the pattern based on the size of your dog.

Place the pattern over your wool fabric. Tape the pattern to the wool so it stays in place as you cut out the wool using fabric shears. Glue 2-inch strips of Velcro to the ends of the wool where it will come together (abdomen and breastplate) on the dog coat using hot glue. You may sew the Velcro strips onto the fabric if desired.
