How to Make Your Own Pet Potty

Your dog doesn't have to go outside, to do its business, when it's cold or raining. You can provide an indoor elimination area instead. While the pet potty product currently on the market works as a place for your dog to urinate and defecate, its success depends on your training. As such, you can make one yourself at home, and have similar success rates. It doesn't cost much, and takes very little time and effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a large sheet pan in an area that your dog can easily reach, but away from the dog's food and water bowls. A pan measuring 18 by 26 by 1 inches will fit most dogs. If you have a particularly small or large dog, get a smaller or larger sheet pan. You can easily find sheet pans at kitchen supply stores.

    • 2

Lay two layers of old newspaper on the sheet pan, to cover its whole surface. The dog will eliminate on the newspaper, and you can easily remove the newspaper afterward.

    • 3

Mix one tablespoon of mild dish washing liquid and one cup of water. Store this soap solution in a spray bottle near the pet potty.

    • 4

Wear a pair of gloves and discard the newspaper every day. Spray the soap solution onto the tray and wipe the tray with a paper towel to remove any dirt that sticks. Place two fresh layers of newspaper on the pet potty.

    • 5

Make a 5 percent bleach solution and pour it into the pet potty at least every month. Let the bleach solution sit for five minutes. Rinse the pet potty with hot water to disinfect it. Wipe it with a paper towel and wait for it to dry before laying fresh newspaper.
