How to Use Herm Sprenger Prong Collars

The Herm Sprenger prong collar is designed to exert even pressure on a dog's neck, through a series of prongs that disperse the pressure equally across the collar. Unlike traditional choke collars, which apply the brunt of the pressure on the dog's throat when pulled -- the Herm Sprenger prong collar is less harmful and painful to the dog -- while still serving as an aid in obedience training. The purpose of the collar is to communicate negative and positive reinforcement. The collar tightens when the dog presents an unfavorable behavior and releases when the behavior ceases.

Instructions

    • 1

Clip the collar on your dog's neck. Make sure the prongs fit against the dog's skin.

    • 2

Pull the ring at the back of the collar to apply the prongs to your dog's neck. The prongs provide a deterrent from undesired behaviors.

    • 3

Release pressure on the ring to immediately ease the discomfort of the prongs. This immediate feedback gives the dog a strong signal about its behavior, making the prong collar a highly effective aid.

For example, when a dog tries to pull you while walking, you can put pressure on the collar, which can be released when the dog falls in stride with you. This helps the dog to connect its disobedient behavior to the unpleasant feeling of the pressure on its neck, and its positive behavior to the release of that pressure.
