How to Make Belly Bands for Pugs

Belly bands for pugs have a dual purpose. One purpose is for female dogs in heat, to keep the blood from dripping onto floors, furniture and other areas. Another purpose for belly bands is as a diaper to keep the dog from peeing inside your home or other interior areas. Numerous on-line businesses and retail pet stores sell belly bands, but you can also custom make a belly band for your pug.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your pet's belly. Place the end of the tape measure on the belly of your pug, close to the area you need to cover with the belly band and maxi-pad. Wrap the measurer around the top of your dog and bring the other side of the measuring tape to meet the end on your pug's belly.

    • 2

Add 3 inches to the circumference of your pug's belly measurement.

    • 3

Place the fabric on a flat surface and measure the length of the material to match that in Step 2.

    • 4

Measure the material to at least 9 inches wide.

    • 5

Cut the length and width of the fabric so it fits the measurements in Steps 3 and 4.

    • 6

Lay the fabric flat so the 9 inches is along the top and bottom, and the length of the fabric on the sides. Face the design side of the fabric down.

    • 7

Fold over the right side of the fabric to the left. Fold the new right side of the fabric to the left. Repeat again, and fold the right side to the left.

    • 8

Sew across the top and bottom of the multi-layered band to stitch all the layers together.

    • 9

Sew along the right side of the band.

    • 10

Separate the fabric on the left side of the band, so the open side of the fabric comes slightly apart from the first fold. Sew along the folded side of the band, so it leaves the open side in place, where you slide in the maxi-pad.

    • 11

Sew one piece of Velcro to the top of the right piece of the belly band. Sew the other side of the Velcro on the bottom of the left edge of the belly band. When the band goes on to your pug, the two pieces of Velcro should meet to hold the band on your dog.
