How to Make a Dog Bed From a Baby Mattress

Dogs are man's best friend and taking care of a pet dog is part of owning the dog. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the baby mattress. Use a measuring tape and measure all of the dimensions. Get the height, width and depth. Measurements are necessary to determine the amount of fabric for the project.

    • 2

Select a preferred fabric. For a dog bed, the ideal fabric is a tough and durable fabric that will not rip easily. Double the mattress dimensions and get about 3 inches extra for seam allowance.

    • 3

Place the fabric on a table or floor so that the inside of the fabric is facing the table and the outside is facing up. Put the baby mattress on top of the fabric and cover it with the other side. Adjust so that the mattress is covered and has a little extra. Pin up the sides with sewing pins.

    • 4

Slip the baby mattress out of the fabric. Sew up the sides of the fabric along the pins, removing pins while sewing.

    • 5

Turn the fabric so that the inside faces inward and the outside faces out. Slip the baby mattress back into the fabric so that only one side is left open and the mattress sits in the middle.

    • 6

Fold the fabric at the open side inward and pin the fabric so the last seam can close. Sew along the final seam of the fabric to close the baby mattress in the middle. Place the new dog bed in a desired location.
