Instructions

Find an old discarded couch cushion.

Find an old discarded couch cushion. This will be the base for your day bed. If you can find two or more, then you can make the day bed higher, or make a second day bed for another dog, or use the matching cover on the second cushion to make the back of the daybed.

    • 2

Decide how high you would like your doggy daybed to be. Of course you only have this option if you have more than one cushion. For a higher daybed, you can sew two cushions on top of each other.

    • 3

Decide what material you will use for the back and sides of the doggy day bed. To make a simple, yet functional, back and side, you will make and attach a tube like pillow that will end up being a U shape, creating an easy back and sides. In the end, you will have a creation that actually looks like a doggy couch and daybed. Because your dog will be lying on the pillow, you want it to be a comfortable material and you will want it to match the base of the daybed. This is why having the cover from the second couch cushion is best.

Cut the material for your tube-like pillow in 14 to 16 inch wide strips. Of course you can make the pillow wider if you have a smaller dog and narrower if you have a larger dog.

    • 5

Attach the strips by sewing them together until you have a long enough strip to create an arc along the back and sides of the cushion. Make sure to leave a few inches on both ends for sewing room.

    • 6

Turn the tube inside out so that you have your desired color facing out. Then, start pushing the stuffing to the middle. Put as much stuffing in as you want. After fully stuffed, pin both ends closed and arranged the pillow in a semicircle on the cushion.

Pin the pillow in place on the cushion and using your needle and thread sew the back side of the pillow to the base. Make sure you remove the pins as you go. After the back is done, sew the ends of the pillow closed while sewing it to the cushion at the same time. This should give your dog's daybed a finished look.

Cover the newly made doggy daybed with an inexpensive blanket or extra cloth that can be easily removed for washing if you are worried about messes getting on the daybed.
