How to Rig a Dog Run with a Cable

Not everyone has a fenced yard to keep their dog in, but installing invisible fence can be expensive. You don't want to keep your dog cooped up inside all day, but you also don't want to come home to find he's run away, or worse, been hit by a car. You can safely contain your dog in your yard and allow him to run around and get exercise by rigging up a dog run with a cable.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine your yard to figure out where you will be installing the cable. You can attach the cable between two points, such as a pair of trees, a set of posts, or the edges of buildings such as your house and shed.

    • 2

Measure the distance to figure out the length of cable you will need. Cables typically come in 50-, 75-, and 100-foot lengths.

    • 3

Purchase the cable and lead kit from a pet store in the length you require for your yard. Thread the cable through the lead if the lead doesn't have a clip that opens.

    • 4

String the cable tightly between the two points you've selected in your yard. Clip the free end of the lead to the dog's collar, and your furry friend is ready to run on his own.
