How to Build a Dog Cone

A dog cone or Elizabethan Collar is a cone collar placed around a dog's neck to prevent him from chewing or biting his skin. These cones are usually placed on dogs after surgery or if they have a skin irritation. The material is usually a hard plastic, which is difficult for a dog to chew through. Although they are readily available for purchase at pet supply stores or at a veterinarian's office, it may be necessary to make a temporary cone at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the dog's current collar. This will be the neck measurement for the dog cone.

    • 2

Draw a semi-circle in the middle of the poster board. The length should be equivalent to the dog's neck measurement.

    • 3

Draw the edge of the outer collar. The length should be about half the size of the dog's neck. Cut of the cone and fold the sides together.

    • 4

Cut slits in the poster board on the bottom where it will be on the neck. These slits should be an inch or so apart.

    • 5

Weave the dog's collar through the slits. Fasten the homemade dog cone on the dog using the buckle for the collar. You can also use shoelaces to tie the collar on the dog.
