How to Build a Beagle Dog Cage

Improper housing is linked to poor behavior in dogs, so creating a kennel that suits your beagle's psychological needs as much as a restraint is important for owners who want to have a happy, well-behaved dog. A kennel that is 10 feet by 5 feet should serve adequately for housing a beagle while its owners are away, although long-term kenneling may lead to behavioral problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark off a 10-foot-by- 5-foot section of yard with a chalk line. Dig fence post holes 1 foot deep at the corners and in the middle of the longer, 10-foot borders of the area. Dig foot-deep holes for the gate supports where you intend to locate the door.

    • 2

Set fence posts and gate supports in post holes. Backfill the holes, tamping the soil down to provide a solid mooring for the posts.

    • 3

Spread gravel in the marked-off area. Spread it 3 inches deep.

    • 4

Affix loop caps to the tops of fence posts. Insert top rails through the caps.

    • 5

Install a tension bar on the corner of one of the fence posts, threading it through the chain-link fabric before you affix it to the post. Unroll the fence fabric to the length of the side of the fence, either 10 or 5 feet long, depending upon the edge on which you start. Insert a tension bar about 3 inches from the end you plan to cut the fencing.

    • 6

Stretch the fence fabric. With one end already attached to the post on the tension bar installed in the previous step, use the block and tackle to stretch the fence fabric, affixing the tackle to the tension bar on the loose end. The fence should have a couple inches of give when stretched to the correct tension.

    • 7

Attach the tension bar to the post. You may need to rethread another tension bar in the correct position in the fence fabric and attach that to the post instead of using the one to which the block and tackle are connected.

    • 8

Cut the fence fabric at the tension bar, making sure to bend loose wire edges back so your beagle doesn't cut itself on them.

    • 9

Repeat Steps 5 through 8 for the other three walls.

    • 10

Hang the gate piece by its hinges on the gate supports installed in Step 2.
