What Size Crate Should I Get for My Adult Sheltie?

Shelties, also known as the Shetland sheepdog, are fairly small in comparison to an average-sized dog. Their sizes vary from small to mid-sized, which can make choosing a crate somewhat tricky.
  1. Determine the Purpose of the Crate

    • Before choosing a crate for a sheltie, consider your reasons for the crate, such as travel or potty training. This will determine the type of crate and also the size. Many types of crates exist, but the most universal model is the plastic kennel. You can use these at home or during travel.

    Size Up Your Sheltie

    • Shelties can range from15 to 25 lbs. and 13 to 16 inches in height. As a rule of thumb, the crate should be 12 inches longer than the sheltie's length from head to tail. The width of the crate should be about two-thirds of the length. This will give your sheltie enough room to stand up, turn around and lay down.

    Crate Size and Purchasing

    • Most shelties will need a mid-sized crate, but some of the bulkier dogs will need a larger one. Since most stores will not allow you to return your pet crate once used, taking your dog to get a better side-by-side estimate is the best option. Many pet supply stores such as PetSmart allow you to bring your pet to the store.
