Things You'll Need
- Lawn edger
- Electric fence transmitter
- Electric fence wires
- Transmitter mounting bracket
- Screwdriver
- Wire stripper
- Wire nut
- Waterproofing compound
Instructions
Select a location for the fence transmitter. It should be inside, in a dry area that doesn't reach temperatures below freezing. Select a location at least 3 feet from other appliances, and near a window. Screw the transmitter mounting bracket into the wall with your screwdriver. Lower the transmitter onto the bracket.
Strip the ends of the wire by 1/2 inch. Open the transmitter and insert the ends of the wire into the bottom of the transmitter. Close the transmitter and then feed the wires out the window.
Twist the wires together and walk towards the boundary of your property. Continue twisting the wires together until you get there. Lay the twisted section on the ground. Twisting the wires turns off the signal, so the pet can cross that part of the wire.
Take one part of the wire and walk the boundary of your property until you get halfway around it. Go back to your twisted wire and pick up the other part of the wire. Walk in the other direction around your property boundary until you meet the first wire.
Cut a 1/2 inch of the protective covering off the ends of each wire with the wire stripper. Splice the wire by twisting the exposed wire together and inserting it into a wire nut. Coat around and on the wire nut with waterproofing compound.
Check your wire boundary to make sure it is consistent with the areas in which you want your dog to have access.
Use the lawn edger to dig a small trench about 1 to 2 inches deep around your property boundary, following the wire and moving it out of the way as you go. Remember to dig a trench for the twisted wire as well.
Lay the wire into the trench and cover it with the soil.
Plug in the transmitter.
