How to Make Pet Stairs

Pet stairs provide an easy and convenient way for your small pets to access your lap, or their designated side of the couch. Whether you have a small puppy, kitten or just a small breed animal, making pet steps allows you to keep things accessible to them. Easy to make from simple materials, pet steps can be made to last, or to be disposed of once your pets have outgrown them.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one of the foam packing blocks flat in front of you. Make sure the block measures about 5 inches thick by 12 inches long, by 5 inches wide.

    • 2

Adhere a second block of equal size to the broad side of the first. This makes it about 10 inches wide by 12 inches long by 5 inches thick. Use the spray craft adhesive to glue them together and let them sit for about 10 minutes to dry.

    • 3

Measure and cut a segment of carpet to match the measurements of the foam block structure. Choose a fine to medium-density carpet so that your pet's claws don't snag the loops.

    • 4

Spray the craft adhesive over the entire surface of the top and sides of the foam blocks. Layer the section of carpet over the blocks. Make sure to press the carpet firmly around the edges and corners, adhering it at all sides. Let it sit for about 20 minutes before you continue.

    • 5

Spray the bottom of a third foam block measuring the size as the first and second individual ones. Make sure to completely coat the bottom with the adhesive.

    • 6

Place the block firmly onto the carpeted area directly located above an individual foam block. This creates a sort of step.

    • 7

Measure and cut a segment of carpet that matches the measurements of the top foam block. Adhere the carpet to the block as done in step 4. Let the pet steps dry for about an hour before allowing your pets to use them.
