Dog Walker Checklist

If you usually grab the dog's leash and head out the door, think again. Preparing for a dog walk doesn't take much time, but packing a few essential items could prevent messy or difficult situations. So grab an unused fanny pack or shoulder bag, pack up and head out for some exercise and bonding time with your pet and fresh air.
  1. Harness or Collar

    • Collars, harnesses and leashes help the pet owner restrain and control their dog during walks. To make the outing enjoyable for both the pet and owner, choose a collar or harness that fits your dog's body structure. Collars should not fit loose enough to slide over the pet's head, according to Doctors Foster and Smith. Docile pets with necks more slender than the width of their heads can wear collars. For exuberant dogs and pets with wide necks, consider a harness for more control and comfort. Depending on the style of harness, various straps span the dog's chest, shoulders, back or muzzle.

    Leash

    • Attach a leash to the dog's collar or harness. Leases vary in length and materials. Four- to-six foot leashes offer dog walkers complete control over their pet, according to The Dog Guide online. Retractable leashes seem convenient for dogs that enjoy exploring, but this leash style offers little overall control if an emergency arises. Common leash materials include nylon, leather, cotton or chain-link. The Dog Guide says leather offers the most comfort and durability.

    Reflective Elements

    • When walking in the evening, use reflective materials to make the dog visible to motorists. Reflective tape can adhere to leashes, collars, harnesses or dog sweaters. For extra protection, attach dangling reflective tags or blinking accessories to the dog's collar or leash.

    Identification

    • In the event the leash breaks and the dog runs away, make sure it has identification tags hanging from it's collar or harness, advises veterinarian Dr. Gary L. Ailes. A basic tag includes the pet's name, a phone number to reach the owner and an address where the pet can be returned.

    Supplies

    • When dogs exercise their bowels, wake up. Pack a few dog waste bags to keep your walking path clean for other pet owners. For long walks on a vacation or in an unfamiliar territory, pack a cellular phone, gauze-based vet wrap and a small collapsible scissors. In the event of a minor injury, you're prepared to stabilize a cut, wound or abrasion and call for help. A few bottles of water and a collapsible water bowl can keep pets hydrated.
