How to Use Waterproof Connectors for a Dog and Pet Safe Fence

Underground pet fences emit an electronic frequency that shocks a receiver on the pet's collar if it tries to cross the fence boundary. These "invisible" fences are underground wires connected to a battery supply. Because the wires are buried, you must use waterproof connectors to splice them together and prevent them from getting wet. Otherwise, the wires will rust and water will short out the connection, making the pet fence ineffective.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert one of the pet fence wires one-half inch into one of the holes in the wire stripper. Close the handles on the wire strippers tightly with one hand and grasp the long end of the wire with the other hand. Pull back on the long end of the wire, which pulls it out of the wires strippers and removes the plastic coating from the wire.

    • 2

Repeat the wire stripping process to remove the plastic coating from the other wire.

    • 3

Place the exposed metal ends of both pieces of wire side-by-side. Tie a knot in the wires approximately 6 inches from the end to prevent the wires from coming loose when you bury them. Grasp the exposed metal tips of each wire and give them one to two twists with your fingers to wrap them around each other.

    • 4

Insert the metal ends of the wire into the open end of a plastic wire nut and turn the wire nut clockwise approximately three times.

    • 5

Insert the plastic wire nut and wires into a waterproof wire nut cover as far as it will go. Pull one wire to each side of the cap on the cover and press the cap downward until it snaps closed.
