How to Clean Products Used by Dog Kennels

Dog kennels and the products used by dog kennels should be cleaned on a regular basis. Clean everything inside the dog kennel thoroughly to help prevent contamination and the spread of bacteria and germs from one dog to another, or from dogs to humans. Products used by dog kennels include scoopers, spray bottles, dog toys, tennis balls, food bowls, water bowls, towels, blankets and any other products that might have contact with the dogs.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the products out of the kennels and away from the dogs. You shouldn't be cleaning products around the dogs.

    • 2

Dilute the disinfectant cleaning solution you're using with water. Dilute any cleaner containing bleach with one part cleaner, 32 parts water. You will usually need about twice as much of a cleaner without bleach, but it varies, depending on the specific chemicals being used. Follow the specific instructions laid out by the manufacturer.

    • 3

Dip solid objects, such as toys, scoopers and bowls, into the diluted cleaning solution. Use a small scrub brush to clean any noticeable dirt or waste material. Rinse the objects thoroughly with hot water and let them dry completely before putting them back in with the dog.

    • 4

If a dishwasher is available at the shelter, clean food and water dishes in it. You can clean many food and water dishes at once when using a dishwasher. Use disinfecting dishwashing liquid.

    • 5

Run blankets, towels, and other soft items, such as stuffed animals and dog beds, through the washing machine. Clean these items when they're soiled, or before allowing a new dog to use them. Wash the items using regular laundry soap and hot water. Hang dry or use a dryer before placing them back in with the dog.
