Concept
-
The slip collar is intended for training purposes when dealing with hyperactivity, aggressive or other behavioral issues. It's designed to apply pressure to the dog's brachial nerve, simulating a corrective bite or nip from a mother dog.
Materials
-
Although the chain-style slip lead comes to mind, the collar can be made from any resilient material. It's common to find nylon, bungee and fabric material. A standard leash can also be made into a slip collar by slipping the clasp through the handle to make a loop through which to put your dog's head.
Misconceptions
-
The slip collar is widely known as a "choke collar" or "choke chain." However, the original intention of the collar was not to choke the animal. Misuse of the collar by individual dog owners has given the lead a bad reputation.
Considerations
-
Before putting a slip lead on your dog, be sure to properly research the technique and purchase the appropriate size for your pet. This will prevent any injuries to your dog, and will provide you with the knowledge for proper training.
Warnings
-
If thorough research has not been done or proper care taken, the slip lead should not be used. It can be a dangerous tool if handled incorrectly and can cause severe injuries to your pet. Once training has been completed, and you have control over your dog, switch to a standard collar.
