How to Make Purses That Hold Dogs

Create an attractive, practical and roomy purse that will safely hold your pooch along with your wallet, cell phone and lipstick. Your darling doggie will have plenty of breathing room in this cozy yet glamorous purse, and the bag is a breeze to wipe clean if an accident occurs. The purse construction requires no special sewing skills.

  • 1 yard oilcloth
  • Sewing machine
  • Strong thread
  • Hook and loop circles
  • Fabric adhesive
  • 1 1/2 yards heavy 1-inch-wide nylon strapping

      Cut five pieces of oilcloth to measure 10 inches by 10 inches for the purse bottom and sides. Cut one piece of oilcloth to measure 8 inches by 8 inches for a front pocket. Cut one piece of oilcloth to measure 8 inches by 2 inches for a pocket flap.

      Attach the front pocket to one piece of fabric with a zigzag stitch on three sides, leaving the top of the pocket open.

      Attach the pocket flap by sewing a zigzag stitch along the top of the flap, positioning the flap top edge 1/2 inch above the top of the pocket.

      Attach two hook and loop circles to the front of the pocket and the underside of the pocket flap with the fabric adhesive.

      Sew the purse sides to the bottom, one at a time, right sides together, using a straight stitch with a 1/4-inch seam. Attach the sides to each other by sewing with a straight stitch with a 1/4-inch seam. Turn inside out to the right side.

      Cut the nylon strapping to the desired length for two comfortable shoulder straps and add 2 inches. Pin one strap to one side in two places, 3 inches from the corners and 1 inch down from the top inside edge. Sew two lines of zigzag stitch to secure the straps, at the top purse edge and the bottom strap edge. Repeat for a strap on the opposite side of the purse.

      Cut the plastic sheet to measure 9 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches and place in the bottom of the purse.
