How to Build an English Bulldog Kennel

All dogs need certain things: food, water, attention and plenty of exercise. When you're housebound or busy, one way to give your dog a chance to exercise is to build it an outdoor kennel. For bulldogs, who aren't overly active, build a medium-sized kennel for fresh air and sunshine.

  Plan your kennel before you start. Put the kennel on level ground, where the dog will have easy access to both sunshine and shade. Put the kennel close to the house so you'll see or hear if your bulldog is having trouble. Rake the area you choose to get rid of rocks and plants.

  Measure out the area for the slab. Build an 8-foot-by-13-foot kennel for a bulldog. Hammer wooden stakes into the ground at the corners of your measured area, and push boards into the soil to build a boundary for the area. Mix concrete as directed on the label, and pour a foundation 4 inches thick. Allow the concrete to cure for 24 hours. Remove the boards.

  Purchase a kennel kit that matches the foundation you've poured. Kits are available at pet stores and retailers, and come with premeasured pieces and hardware. This is less expensive and more efficient during construction, and will make your job easier. Gather the tools you need and follow the instructions that come with the kennel kit to erect the back, side, other side and front pieces. Put the roof on last, and make sure all the screws and bolts are tight.

  Put food and water dishes, blankets and toys in the kennel for your bulldog. Remember that your dog will still need entertainment while it's outside. Put your bulldog out for air in the morning and evening, when it's cool and temperate.
