How to Housebreak a Male Dog With a Belly Band

When you decide to adopt a dog, you have to accept that there are probably going to be problems along the way. You also have to be aware that your dog is going to need some training. He's not going to automatically know right from wrong until you teach it to him. One problem that can be particularly difficult to deal with is housebreaking a male dog. This will require a lot of training and commitment on your part. Many methods are available to help housebreak your male dog, including belly bands.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the belly band around your dog's midsection toward his rear. When you male dog lifts his leg to urinate, the belly band will catch the urine similarly to a diaper. Your dog will not like the wet, uncomfortable feeling that results.

    • 2

Remove the soiled belly band and replace it with a clean one as soon as your dog shows that he is uncomfortable or distressed in any way. Once he shows that he doesn't like the result, you can remove it. It's cruel and unnecessary to leave it on.

    • 3

Remove your dog's belly band whenever he's outside or when you aren't supervising him. Never leave your dog's belly band on while he's alone. It can get caught on something in your house, and your dog may not be able to get free. Also, a wet belly band that isn't removed can swell and bind to your dog, constricting him and causing a lot of pain.

    • 4

Praise your dog or give him treats when he urinates outside. Remember, he should never be wearing his belly band while outside of the house. Praising him when he urinates where he's supposed to will reinforce the behavior.

    • 5

Continue putting the belly band on your dog while he's indoors and supervised for a few weeks. After a few weeks, start removing it for small periods of time while supervising him.

    • 6

Increase the amount of time your dog can be in the house without the belly band. Eventually, you can get rid of the belly band altogether. Like crate training, it's not meant to be a lifelong solution, but rather a training tool to help housebreak your dog.
