How to Put on a Nylon Training Collar

Nylon training collars aid dog owners in teaching their dogs to walk calmly on a leash without pulling. They are far more humane than spiked collars, but it can be difficult to understand where all those straps and clips attach. A properly-fitting nylon training collar is essential for successful training.

Clip the end of the leash onto the metal ring (or control ring) on the collar. Undo the plastic clip on the neck strap and hold one end of the neck strap straight out in each hand so the nose strap and leash hang perpendicular to the neck strap.

    • 2

Loop the neck strap around the dog's neck so the center bar ring--where the nose strap meets the neck strap--sits under the dog's mouth against the neck and above the adams apple. The neck strap should sit at the base of the skull behind the ears. Clasp the neck strap shut and adjust the fit by sliding the excess neck strap through the adjustment bar on the back of the clasp. The neck strap should fit snugly so that you can just fit one finger between it and the dog's neck.

Remove the collar from the dog. Locate the snap clamp, a two-part sliding clamp located on the nose strap. Lift up the tab on the snap clamp and slide the clamp down to meet the control ring. Push the tab down until it locks in place, securing the clamp.

Locate the figure-eight-shaped ring where the nose strap meets the neck strap. This is called the center bar ring. Grasp the nose strap where the nylon sits on top of the center bar ring and pull up so the snap clamp meets the center bar ring.

Place the dog in a sit position. Hold one end of the neck strap and one side of the nose strap in each hand. Slip the nose strap over the dog's muzzle. Clasp the neck strap around the dog's neck so it sits in the pre-fit position at the base of the skull, with the center bar ring above the dog's adams apple.

Lift up the tab on the snap clamp and adjust upwards along the nose strap to fit the strap. The strap should have enough slack to move back and forth along the dog's muzzle, between the nose and the back corners of the mouth. Push the tab downwards to lock the clamp in place once you achieve the proper fit.
