How to Make Slippers for Your Dog

Many people marvel at Alaskan Huskies, Saint Bernards and other types of dogs that can run through snow and ice with few worries about frostbite. Most dogs don't have the same protective adaptations, however. Veterinarians suggest that dog owners protect their dogs from prolonged exposure to extremely cold temperatures and limit their dogs' outdoor time in such weather. Since a dog's sensitive feet are susceptible to frostbite, it's a good idea to keep slippers on a dog who likes to stay outdoors for long periods of time in the cold weather.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the bottom of the dog's paws.

    • 2

Cut out four circles of leather that match the measurements of the circumference of the bottoms of the dog's paws.

    • 3

Slide a child's sock onto each of the dog's paws and mark where the dog's paws touch the ground when he walks, then remove the socks.

    • 4

Sew the leather patches onto the socks within the area of the markings. The leather patches will allow the dog to walk with the slippers without slipping and sliding.

    • 5

Slip the socks back onto the dog's paws.

    • 6

Tie shoelaces around the socks to hold them on the dog's paws. The laces should hold the slippersocks on firmly, but not too tightly. Check that a finger can slip between the shoelace and the dog's leg to ensure that the lace does not tie too tightly.
