Invisible Fencing Options for Dogs

Responsible pet owners care about the safety of their dogs. They want their pets to be able to exercise outside without supervision but not get into trouble off of the property. Invisible fencing is a great way to address this concern without a large expense and the visual element of a traditional fence.
  1. Invisible Dog Fences

    • There are two types of invisible dog fences: wired and wireless. Each type uses a transmitter, and your dog must wear a shock collar tuned to the same frequency as the transmitter.

    Wired Invisible Fences

    • The most common type of invisible dog fence is wired. A weather-proof wire is buried around the perimeter of the area in which you want to contain your dog.

    Wireless Invisible Fences

    • Wireless invisible fences are becoming increasingly popular because they are easier to maintain than wired fences. A circular "safe zone" for the dog is created in the area where you wish to contain it.

    Brands

    • The original and still most popular brand of wired invisible fencing is Invisible Fence. Since its patent expired in 1991, other brands, such as PetSafe Instant Fence and Dog Guard have been developed.

    Advantages

    • Depending upon the size of the area you wish to make available to your pet, invisible fences are much more cost-effective than traditional fencing.

    Disadvantages

    • Invisible fencing works for your dog only. Unlike traditional fencing, it does not discourage stray animals or strangers from coming onto your property. Furthermore, some breeds have a high pain tolerance and are not deterred by an invisible fence.
