Instructions
Decide on a style of hanging dog bowl. There are two main styles of bowl, those which fasten directly to the cage and those which fit into a ring which attaches to the cage. The ring variety are easier to fill, as they can be removed from the cage. However, the directly attached bowls are better for large dogs who are prone to nudging the food dish, as they cannot be overturned by the dog.
Purchase a cage which can be used in conjunction with a hanging bowl and assemble it. Plastic cages rarely can support a hanging bowl, making a metal cage the ideal pick for those wishing to hang a bowl for their dog.
Measure the height of your dog to determine how high the bowl should be hung. The exact height will be determined by where a horizontal bar on the cage is located. However, you should aim to have the bowl hang at chest level, allowing the dog easy access.
Hang the bowl in the cage by hooking the two attachment hooks over a horizontal bar of the cage that most closely approximates the desired height. Position the two hooks so that it minimizes the bowl's ability to slide back and forth by placing them such that the left hook is just to the left of a vertical bar and the right hook is just to the right of a vertical bar.
Fasten the metal support bracket, if your bowl includes one. Some bowls simply feature hooks. However, advanced models include a threaded end extending from the back of the bowl and a metal plate which is inserted over the bolt, then held in place with another bolt. The metal plate presses against the outside of the cage, preventing the bowl from being pulled away from the cage wall.
Test the strength of the bowl's fastenings by filling it with water or food before allowing the dog into the cage. This is important as it will help you avoid the bowl falling on the dog, potentially cauing injury.
