Oxyfresh Water Additive for Pets

Oxyfresh is a dental product designed to help get rid of pets' bad breath and improve overall pet dental hygiene. It is sold by the company Oxyfresh and is available in 4-oz., 16-oz. and 1-gallon containers. As of March 2010, prices range from $6 for the 4-oz. bottle to $71.25 for the gallon.
  1. Description

    • Oxyfresh is a liquid solution, clear without any visible shade of color. The gel associated with the Oxyfresh water additive is also clear but has a thicker consistency like that of an aloe vera gel. There are no artificial dyes used in the product. There is a slight odor that will probably be unnoticed by humans but may be discernible to some pets.

    Ingredients

    • The main ingredient of the Oxyfresh solution is Oxygene, a patented odor eliminator developed by Oxyfresh. While the chemical make-up and precise ingredients in Oxygene are kept secret by the company, Oxyfresh claims that they are nontoxic and work only to destroy particles that cause bad breath. Oxygene is based in a water-soluble solution for Oxyfresh application and only a small part of the formula is active.

    Use

    • Oxyfresh is meant to be poured into a pet's drinking water, with a ratio of 1 tsp. to 1 quart of water. The cap to the Oxyfresh bottle is often used as a measurement when pouring. There are also versions of Oxyfresh that are sprayed directly into the pet's mouth, which need to be used more regularly than the additive.

    Effects

    • The longer the water stays in the mouth, the more effective it will be. Pets that drink quickly will not be as affected by the solution, but in most animals results should be noticeable within three to five days, if not sooner. Oxyfresh recommends consistent, daily use to show quick results. The effects will fade if the solution is no longer used.

    Considerations

    • Some pets, especially cats, may be able to sense the chemical additives in the water and refuse to drink it. Oxyfresh admits this may be a problem and offers a money-back guarantee in such circumstances.
