Canine Back Surgery Recovery

Dogs that have back problems may benefit from surgery as much as humans do. Back surgery is recommended when the dog can no longer perform daily activities such as walking or going to the bathroom on their own.
  1. Identification

    • Back surgery may be performed on dogs to relieve disc problems. Some of these problems may include a herniated disc and degenerative disc disease. The surgery will help to relieve pressure from the spinal cord, reducing pain.

    Potential

    • Your dog can recover quickly from back surgery if the surgery was successful in reducing the amount of pressure from the spinal cord. This depends largely on how much damage was done to the spinal cord before surgery. Also, it is beneficial for physical therapy to be performed after surgery to increase strength and mobility.

    Post Surgery

    • Most dogs will stay in the hospital for three to 10 days after surgery. The dog will be released from the animal hospital when they can urinate on their own and are in less pain.

    Physical Therapy

    • Physical therapy following back surgery can help dogs to regain strength and mobility. Physical therapy will also help the dog begin to walk again and can teach the dog's owner exercises that may keep his muscles flexible. One exercise that is recommended for dogs following back surgery is swimming. Fill a tank that is one or two inches over the dog's head, and allow him to swim while firmly supporting his head. This will help to increase strength and movement.

    Considerations

    • Back surgery should be performed by a qualified surgeon or neurologist. It is important to help your dog recover by managing his weight and following through with the exercises prescribed by the physical therapist.
